After being given your first Pokémon, your next job is to find Birch's child, Brendan or May. They're not too far away, in Route 103, just north of Oldale Town. You'll meet your first wild Pokémon here, but you won't be able to catch them yet, as you don't have any Poké Balls.

Let's begin smoothly[edit]

Ledge Jump
A useful time-saving trick is to leap off the low ledges on the ground. You can only jump from a ledge when you're moving down. Just be careful not to end up in grassy areas.

First, you must traverse Route 101, a pleasant little lane linking directly to Oldale Town. There's no Trainers here and the wild Pokémon here are all weak (all at level 2-3). You can't catch any yet, but it's still a good idea to defeat a couple and level up your starter to give you more of an advantage against your rival in the upcoming battle. Note that when you can catch Pokémon, all Pokémon in this route have a guaranteed catch rate.

If your Pokémon is too weak to go further, you can go heal your team by talking to your mom.

As there is not much to do here, you'll fast reach the north exit of this little route, which brings you to Oldale Town, another little town on your road to become Pokémon Master.

New Pokémon[edit]

#263 Zigzagoon
Pokemon 263Zigzagoon.png
Zigzagoon is the standard Normal-type present in every game of Pokémon. It, and that of its evolution Linoone, have stats that are nothing to write home about; it has reasonable Speed and that's it. It does have an extremely useful ability in Pickup, which gives it a 10% chance to obtain an item after every battle, so that's an excellent way to farm money and items. It also learns several HM moves such as Cut and Surf, making it a useful "HM Slave" so you don't have to waste moveslots on your own team.
#261 Poochyena #265 Wurmple
Pokemon 261Poochyena.png
Poochyena is Dark-type, one of the rarer typings in Hoenn and a very useful one at that. Nevertheless, Poochyena and its evolution Mightyena are still pretty mediocre Pokémon, with Attack being their only decent stat. Poochyena can have one of two abilities: Quick Feet, which boosts its Speed if it has a status condition, or Run Away, which allows escape from any wild Pokémon battle. Its evolution Mightyena can either have Quick Feet or Intimidate, which lowers your enemy's Attack upon switching in.

The standard Bug-type of Hoenn, Wurmple is just plain bad, learning a grand total of three very weak moves. It may randomly evolve into either Silcoon or Cascoon, and from there into Beautifly or Dustox respectively. Its ability is Shield Dust, which prevents it from being affected by the secondary effects of moves. You're better off waiting until later to catch its secondary evolutions, so you'll know for sure what its final form will be.
