Niggles[edit]

I like what's been done so far, but I have some niggles to raise:

  • Why is the text larger than normal? This just creates inconsistency with other guides, and doesn't look too good either.
  • The titles for the Pokémon information boxes at the bottom are inconsistent and don't stand out enough. They should probably be bold and centred.
  • Similarly, the borders on said information boxes are so very 1990s. They should be standardised with the other tables on the wiki: a single one-pixel grey border.
  • The "Starting Pokémon" box at the top could be improved by having "Starting Pokémon" as a header row, then the different colours, then the rest. It also needs its borders sorted.
  • Is there any reason that these images aren't thumbnailed and captioned? It's just my opinion here, but I think thumnailed images look better, and fit in with the rest of the page better. They also allow the user to specify how big they want the thumbnails to be.

Hope this helps. I'm going to dive straight in and sort out the table border issues, as I think they should be changed regardless of any opposition. I'll see if I can get some use out of {{prettytable}}. --DrBob (Talk) 05:35, 10 February 2007 (CST)

OK. I've migrated it all to {{prettytable}}, and fixed a few things, but I've also broken the tables at the bottom slightly. I propose that they be redone as one table instead of two, using two columns and headers effectively. I guess that a while was spent making these tables the way they are, so I'll leave it for the moment to get some feedback. --DrBob (Talk) 06:05, 10 February 2007 (CST)
I wholeheartedly agree, the big text simply isn't necessary. If no one can give me a reason to why it should stay big, I'd be more than happy to fix the text size myself.--Dan 17:57, 10 February 2007 (CST)

I think the reason for the large text is because there's so much in tables and so little outsid them, so this way the tables pad out better. Right now the only thing I don't like is the red background on the encounters table (not used on this page). I've got a few ideas that I'll mess around with later. Wow, ok, a lot of responses. Yeah, the big text is a test of mine to try out something different. I'm basing it on the way that a lot of strategy guides (in print) have main text that is bigger than the text inside of sidebars and other tables. So theoretically, it makes the guide look more professional. Whether it does or not in practice can be debated. Obviously, I'm biased because I happen to like the way it makes the main text stand out from the rest of the page. But if there's an emphatic desire on the part of everyone to see it go, I will not protest. Just live with it for a little bit before you finalize your decision.

Encounter Table colors[edit]

As to the red background on the encounter tables, I was going to use the red to differentiate grassy encounters from surfing encounters, which would appear in blue. If you've got another idea on how to differentiate the two, be my guest. Procyon 18:45, 10 February 2007 (CST)

I was thinking something softer (see StrategyWiki:Sandbox), since the other "neutral" color (the lavender) is quite soft. The second color is also very close to the color of the grass in the game. GarrettTalk 19:15, 10 February 2007 (CST)
Eh... I changed the font from white to black, but the Pokemon seem so washed out now. The problem is that they are faint images to begin with, and when you shrink them down, you lose a lot of clarity. I'm more in favor of a darker color, but if you prefer this, I'll go with it. I encourage you to feel free to change it on your own as well, this guide belongs to all of us. Procyon 19:26, 10 February 2007 (CST)

Items in area[edit]

Should there also be a table for items found in that area, or will they just be listed in the walkthrough? I remember in Viridian Forest there's a large amount of items hidden in corners, such as Potions and whatnot. --Antaios 19:50, 10 February 2007 (CST)

Sounds like a plan. They could maybe be indicated on the map itself (as otherwise directions to them are going to be very vague). In fact, maybe lots of things should be labelled with numbers or letters, and then a table below explain everything. That might make it easier to know what's being described, especially in areas glutted with trainers. GarrettTalk 19:56, 10 February 2007 (CST)
Well, someone will have to mark up the maps, and that will probably be me. The only other problem is that's going to introduce more tables. And to be honest, the further I go with this, the shakier my confidence gets that this is going to work. Maybe I went too complex? I wanted to make it look professional and I wanted information to blend seemlessly, but there's only so many ways you can lay data out. Maybe I need to break things up in to sections, like one section for encounters, one section for Pokemon descriptions, one section for maps. I dunno... Procyon 21:03, 10 February 2007 (CST)

Pokémon Yellow[edit]

Why is information on Pokémon Yellow being included in this guide, when we've already got a Pokémon Yellow guide? Are they being moved around (again)? --DrBob (Talk) 11:35, 10 February 2007 (CST)

As per this discussion (which I admit was never truly formally concluded) it came down to redundancy of information. Since 90% of what applies to R&B applies to Y, why duplicate more than half of the guide for the sake of one game? I set up a What's new guide for Yellow, and linked R&B's TOC to Y's. We could decide once and for all that it should be R/B/Y just as the second gen is G/S/C, or we could leave Yellow as it's own main page and point to the same guide. Personally, I don't mind how we choose to organize the main pages either way, but it would be extremely wasteful to have two copies of nearly identical walkthroughs as seperate instances.
